Have you seen the roofers do their job. Some do not take the plastic of the strip because it takes too much time. That is the roofers job not the manufacturers job.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

If the roof is a 30 year, it has survived 2/3rds of the life, the offer sounds reasonable.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

Our "30 year" GAF Timberline shingles were curled and crumbling after a few years. Absolutely defective product. We filed a claim under the class action suit. Sent photos. They wanted shingles removed from the roof and photos taken from up on the roof. We did this. They just wrote back denying our claim, saying that the shingles are not GAF shingles. This is deception and fraud.

FRANK M -- About the issue of having to transfer the warranty on the roof within 30 days after buying the house... I ran across something about that online. It is a lie that they tried to claim was attorney/client privilege, but the court struck it down as just a PowerPoint. State laws prohibit them from requiring that.
http://webcache.googleuserc...

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

I had timberline shingles installed in 1999 and were refused insurance due to the shingles curling. These were 30 year shingles that are now 19 years old. I was wondering if I can make a claim on these shingles to have them replaced or is it too late to make a claim? If not, where would I make that claim. We are wanting to sell our home in a few years but cannot do so with curled shingles.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

I live at 4516 Reimche dr. Most people never read the warranty they receive from a roof much less any product they buy. All manufactures carry the same "standard" warranty. The posted year warranty such as 20, 30 or 40 does not mean that if anything goes wrong you get a total refund or total replacement not matter the length of time. I could go on and on listing other products most people are familiar with such as tires. Tires carry a warranty with mileage. So if you buy a tire with a 60k mile warranty and you drive it 45k miles and they need replacing, you don't receive 4 new tires.
Having said that your shingles carry multiply warranties for different parts of the shingle. The sealant strip on the back is NOT warrantied for the full term of the warranty (by NO manufacturer). They average 5-10 years only. The rest of the shingle carries the full term of the warranty and is prorated after 10 years (currently). So like the tire you will receive the prorated amount. These warranty terms are consistent throughout all manufacturers.
So, if you receive $$ from GAF on your aging roof I'd take it. For those of you with roofs less than 5 years you should be getting compensated for the material and the labor to put it on (not removal) as stated in your warranty (by all manufacturers).
Also, I can tell you that most related problems with shingles blowing off are related to instillation. Nails placed too high and not on the nail line is the most common problem.
Also before your next purchase of a roof, I would consider GAF's warranty options which are System Plus Warranty and Gold Pledge Warranty and most of the issues go away, since those warranties pay for labor to remove, labor to install and full material system.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

I also filed claim under the class action suit with GAF in 2013. I lived around Danbury, Ct at the time. The settlement I got from GAF covered the cost of materials only, through a coupon issued and redeemable at any GAF roofing distributor. The labor on the job still cost me 7K, but I was pleased nonetheless. The cost avoidance on the materials saved me 8K.....

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

WRONG!! A good contractor calibrates their compressors and guns to drive the nails in the proper distance. I've seen more problems from the "old fashioned way" than I have from nail guns. You gonna rely on a guy to swing a hammer 10s of thousands of times with perfect accuracy? Hammers can overdrive nails. More than likely, they will under drive them though, and workers get tired and start using 2-4 nails per shingle instead of the recommended 5-6. Don't buy into the "good ok fashioned way" BS.that's usually an argument made by "Pete-n-a-pickup" redneck roofing companies who can't afford compressors, guns, and the maintenance. Of course, like it always does, it comes down to the contractor you choose and whether or not they follow installation guidelines or cut corners. Any contractor worth his salt will machine vs hand nail, but with the right calibrations and people pulling the triggers.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

Laurie, I've been roofing for a while now. GAF DOESN'T install roofs. They have preferred contractors, but it isn't difficult to get your name on that list. Keep in mind you are 19 years into a shingle that was designed to last 30, IF installed correctly, IF ventilated well. I would take whatever they offer. I've seen another manufacturer settle claims like this by giving people the money for what the shingles originally cost, then prorating that amount, in your case more than 50%, and Homeowner gets less than $1k on a 10k roof. You were more than likely going to have to replace your roof in 5-7 years anyway.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

Don't know when or where a 24square roof cost $10.5k. Well, if it does it was installed with a nail gun using coil nails. The crew turn up the air on the air compressor and run more then 1 nail gun on it. The drives the nail to deep or not deep enough. Get your roof installed using hammer and nails the old way of installation. The nails are set perfect every time. This will add a cost to the roof, but no blown off shingles years down the road.

Re: GAF Timberline Shingles - Class Action - Class Action Lawsuit

Help, we opened a claim because our timberline shingles are not glued down. after 17 months , the GAF company wants to settle for only 2002.00 on a roof job that coast us 8500.00 how is that fair? That amount doesn't even come close. we would be out all the labor cost and have to replace other parts of the roof that will now not be covered if something would happen in later days if we do take the settlement. GAF denies ANY responsability for the problem instead relying on the fact I didn't transfer the warranty within 30 days, impossible as it was a foreclosure and had no idea whose shingles were on the roof until the problem was discovered. They have also said that their blowoff warranty is only good for 10 years despite if this was a manufacturing problem, which it obviously is due to lack of good or sufficient tar to seal the roof properly.

I WILL NEVER buy another GAF product and will insist that any home I buy from now on have something other than a GAF product on the roof.
