Fentanyl patches are not used in lieu of tylenol with codeine! They are for extreme, chronic pain. My late husband had a high pain tolerance - but with stage 4 cancer that was in his spine, ribs, and several organs, the Fentanyl patches were the only thing that would keep his pain at a tolerable level.

Until you have, you would not understand. When you do nothing but shake from the pain you could care less how habit forming it is so long as it relieves your pain.

I have Cauda Equina syndrom, found out I got it due to back surgery so it is not treatable. But due to extreme pain I have been on patches for almost 6 years now. 2 times I put on a patch to find it was defective, both times I took in a three day dose in a matter of hours. Found myself in emergency room each time due to problems with breathing. Now even though I use the patches still due to chronic pain, I check them, my fiance checks them when I am sleeping. Do not ever wish to go through this again.

I have been on fentanyl for years due to an accident, chronic pain. I solved the problem with the leaking and the gooy mess by getting the patches that do not have a liquid center. I will say my abdomen is so scared now from skin teteriation from the leaking and glue used by the duragesic patch that i demand and get the patches I want anymore.

Fentanyl is also intensely habitforming. It's hard to draw the line between giving people some relief from pain and potentially ruining their lives and when and where that is a risk worth taking. Fentanyl seems overly dangerous to me, though. Then again, I've never had to live with that much pain.
